Timothée Chalamet is catching some heat online after comments he made about ballet and opera.
According to People, during a town hall conversation with Matthew McConaughey, Timothee said he wouldn’t want to work in art forms where people are constantly trying to “keep them alive,” saying that it can feel like “no one cares about this anymore.”
Even though he said “all respect” to ballet and opera artists, they note that the comment sparked backlash from the performing arts community.
People reports that major institutions like the Metropolitan Opera and artists in the classical world pushed back, highlighting the passion and work that goes into those art forms. Plus - some celebrities also weighed in, with critics saying the comments dismissed centuries-old art forms that still have huge cultural impact.
Despite the controversy, People writes that the moment likely won’t affect his Oscars chances, since voting closed before the backlash really picked up.
