Eric Dane, the actor so many people know and love from Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at 53.

According to People, the news comes less than a year after he publicly shared that he had been diagnosed with ALS. They note that his family says that he passed away surrounded by those closest to him.

People notes that after decades on screen, he became truly iconic as Mark Sloan, aka "McSteamy," on Greys, but his career stretched far beyond that. He was also well known for his work in projects like Euphoria and a long list of other TV and film credits.

People reports that following his ALS diagnosis, he spoke openly about the disease and became a real advocate -helping bring more awareness to a condition that many people still don’t fully understand.

They note that in their official announcement of Eric's passing, his family described him as a devoted husband, father, and someone who deeply valued the people around him, while also asking for privacy as they grieve.
