Major Changes To The Miss America Competition
The Miss America Organization announced it will ditch its tradition of having a swimsuit contest as part of the Miss America Pageant. Miss America Chairwoman Gretchen Carlson announced the change on Good Morning America.
Gretchen Carlson, chairwoman of the Miss America Scholarship Organization announced major changes to Miss America this morning live on Good Morning America. There will no longer be a lifestyle and fitness (swimsuit) phase of competition and she will be “revamping” the evening wear (gown) phase as well. To me, this is eliminating tradition. Some of you may not have known this but in the 1920’s the Miss America pageant was originally JUST a swimsuit competition. It started with hopes of keeping tourists in Atlantic City past Labor Day. Not only did the swimsuit portion of competition represent tradition, it ALSO represented and shined light on strong, healthy, disciplined women who knew how to be confidently beautiful no matter their shape or size. Evening gown is tradition as well. With style being one of the four points of the Miss America crown, it gave ladies an opportunity to show their personal style through class, elegance and grace. Let’s be honest, neither of these phases of competition are the deciding factor to who necessarily deserves the job of a local, state or national title....it’s a woman’s work ethic, heart and intelligence that earn those jobs BUT swimsuit and gown are part of the journey. I will forever be thankful for The Miss America Organization because it helped shape me into the woman I am today. With that being said, I am PROUD to have worked hard and walked the Miss Connecticut and Miss America stage in both a swimsuit and gown. This was my own choice and the other 51 women I was lucky to compete with choice as well. #confidence #missamerica #swimsuit #gown #pageant #competition #fitnessmotivation
