Since she and Dwayne Wade 's baby, Kaavia James , was born, Gabrielle Union has been really open about the surrogacy process, how they made that decision, and the affects it has had on her as a mom.
For the March cover story of Women's Health , Gabrielle opens up even more about what ultimately choosing to go the surrogacy route meant to her.
" There’s nothing more that I wanted than to cook my own baby," she explained.
Gabrielle also explained that the idea of a surrogate, and making the decision to find a one for she and Dwayne felt like "surrendering to failure."
And while it's easy for those of us looking in on the situation to say "of course not!" and truly believe it doesn't make her any less of a mom, I can't imagine how I would have felt if Michael and I had never been able to get pregnant after our own struggles.
Gabrielle also said that she was worried about actually being "embraced as a mom" because of the perception of surrogacy in a very real moment:
“People want to see the bump, hear that you got hemorrhoids — they want to know you’re like them... I was like ‘This is going to seem like the most Hollywood s— ever. Will I be embraced as a mom?’ It’s terrifying.”
Once she became comfortable with the idea of finding someone to help bring she and Dwayne's baby dreams to life, Gabrielle had only one quality she was focused on in the surrogate - and it might surprise you!
“Some people care about the race, religion or food habits of their surrogate. I was like 'I want a reader.'"
Gabrielle admits in the interview that she plans on raising her daughter by instilling morals and values in here, and then letting her "be free." And I LOVE what she's saying.
"Get an F because she didn’t study. Pick the wrong dude. Pick the wrong friends and figure it out. I don’t want to be super judge-y.”
Congratulations on your beautiful family, Gabrielle and Dwayne!
