Do We Need to Keep Wearing Masks? Dr. Wachter Weighs In

Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at UCSF Dr. Bob Wachter joined Ryan Seacrest on-air again to answer more of our questions as the world continues to navigate the shift from the global COVID-19 pandemic to pre-pandemic life.

In a major step toward returning to normalcy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased mask-wearing guidance for fully vaccinated people last week, allowing them to stop wearing masks outdoors in crowds and in most indoor settings.

"If you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask," President Biden said, summarizing the new guidance and encouraging more Americans to get their shots. "Get vaccinated - or wear a mask until you do."

It's important to note the guidance still calls for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings like buses, planes, hospitals, etc.

So, how does Dr. Wachter feel about the new guidelines?

"I'm still a little bit on the fence about it," Dr. Wachter shared. "And the reason is I’m perfectly comfortable with no masks if everyone else in the place is vaccinated. I’m perfectly comfortable with no masks if the unvaccinated are wearing masks, but the question is is it safe enough if you’re vaccinated and you’re sitting right next to somebody at a bar who is not vaccinated and not wearing a mask? And that to me depends on how much COVID there is in the community."
