Fraternity Expelled From Syracuse University Over 'Secret' Video

Syracuse University has permanently expelled a fraternity after an offensive video went viral that fraternity members say was meant as satire.

Chancellor Kent Syverud announced the permenent expulsion of the fraternity in a video posted to the University's website

"We are permanently expelling the Syracuse University chapter of Theta Tau. Today, Dean of Students Robert Hradsky delivered a letter to Theta Tau leadership confirming this decision. This follows the immediate action we took within two hours of receiving and authenticating the video. As you know, at that time we immediately suspended the chapter halting all of its activities. The racist, antisemetic, homophobic, ableist and sexist video was part of an official Theta Tau sponsored-event."

Syverud also said that an investigation by the University's Department of Public Safety was also underway and investigators had already interviewed 38 individuals about the incident. The department will complete its investigation this week and may recommend charges and refer the students seen in the video to the university's disciplinary process.

Some of the outcomes for the students include suspension or outright expulsion from Syracuse University. The fraternity members will be allowed to appeal the decision, as they go through the process.

The fraternity apologized on Friday after the video went viral, saying that racism "has no place on a university campus."

The video was posted to a closed Facebook group under the name of a Theta Tau member. In it, one pledge can be seen saying that he, 'solemnly swear to have hatred in my heart for n****rs, s**cs and most importantly the f*ckin' k***s."
