As a Hartford-based company, New Country MINI is partnering with the city’s public schools to ensure teachers and students have the necessary materials to facilitate the learning process starting on the very first day of class.Â
Approximately 21,000 students were enrolled in Hartford Public Schools in 2013-14, of whom 84.6% were low-income. Based on the 2010 census figures, Hartford has more people living below the federal poverty rate (32%) than any community in Connecticut and far above the state average of 9.2%. Approximately 45% of youth under 18 are among these Hartford families.
“With dwindling funding, we are struggling to provide our schools with the essentials for education,” said Marta Bentham, Director of Family Services & Ombudsman of Hartford Public Schools’ Welcome Center. “In spite of our challenges, the district has made dramatic progress by closing the state achievement gap by 30% and increasing the four-year graduation rate from 34% in 2007 to 72.5% in 2013. New Country’s supply drive is truly an answer to our prayers to help us accomplish our goals.”
New supplies such as backpacks, pens, pencils, erasers, big wide ruled notebooks, college ruled notebooks, and pencil/ruler/sharpener kits, as well as monetary donations will be collected at the New Country MINI showroom located at 236 Reverend Moody Overpass in Hartford and will then be loaded into a MINI Cooper that will be parked on the sales floor.
“We thought it would be a fun, visual way to track our progress by filling one of our MINIs,” adds Parker. “We hope to collect so many supplies that we fill all the cars in our dealership!”
